Kathy Kallick
Kathy Kallick (born September 19, 1952) is a guitarist, singer, songwriter, and bandleader from Chicago, Illinois. Her mother, Dodi Kallick, was a folk musician who helped establish Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music. Kallick discovered bluegrass while studying at the San Francisco Art Institute, where she earned a BFA in 1977. In 1975 she, Laurie Lewis, Barbara Mendelsohn, Dorothy Baxter, and Sue Shelasky played three songs together at an open mic and became the Good Ol' Persons. By 1980 the band's lineup had settled as Kallick on guitar, John Reischman on mandolin, Sally Van Meter on Dobro, Paul Shelasky on fiddle, and Bethany Raine on bass. The band released its debut album, Good Ol' Persons, in 1977 and played for about twenty years. She and Laurie Lewis recorded the duo album Together in 1991, and her first solo album, What Do You Dream About?, came out the year before. She sang on True Life Blues: The Songs of Bill Monroe (1996), which won a Grammy Award as well as IBMA's Album of the Year and Recorded Event of the Year. She formed the Kathy Kallick Band in 1996, and its debut album, Walkin' in My Shoes, came out in 1999. She has toured internationally with the band, and its later lineup has included Annie Staninec, Greg Booth, Tom Bekeny, and Cary Black. In 2014 she and Lewis released Laurie & Kathy Sing the Songs of Vern & Ray. She has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Northern California Bluegrass Society.
