Gloria Belle
Gloria Belle Flickinger (June 9, 1939 – May 5, 2023) was a bluegrass singer and multi-instrumentalist (mandolin, banjo, guitar, bass, and even snare drum) from Silver Run, Maryland, raised in Hanover, Pennsylvania. Knoxville grocer and TV host Cas Walker gave her the name "Gloria Belle" because he couldn't pronounce Flickinger. She worked on his Cas Walker Show and spent a festival season with Charlie Monroe. Rebel released Gloria Belle Sings and Plays Bluegrass in the Country in 1967, and she played in all-woman bands in the 1960s. She was a member of Jimmy Martin's Sunny Mountain Boys from 1968 to 1975, recording "Milwaukee Here I Come" and new versions of "White Dove" and "Uncle Pen," and recorded with him again in 1978. In 1990 she formed Gloria Belle & Tennessee Sunshine with her husband Mike Long, recording on her own Southern Belle label, and she received IBMA's Distinguished Achievement Award in 1999.
