Wind in the Willows

Wind in the Willows was a nightclub in a three-story 1906 mansion in downtown Nashville, Tennessee. Built by feed-mill owner Alex J. Porter, the house was lost to the Depression, took in boarders during World War II, and served as a nursing home before Michael Murphy bought it in 1971 and turned it into a music club, setting up the bandstand in the family's old front parlor and serving light food to the crowd. Though primarily known as a bluegrass club, it also booked jazz and country acts, and it gave a regular home to banjo player Hubert Davis and his Season Travelers, who played there from 1978 to 1982. In the late 1970s it also became the incubator for Riders in the Sky. The club never turned much of a profit, and the mansion went on to house a mortgage company, a governor's campaign, and Capricorn Records before becoming a law office in 1997.
