Walkingwood Mandolin Quartet
Bands / Ensembles
The Walkingwood Mandolin Quartet, formed in 1999, is an instrumental group from Connecticut that uses the classical mandolin quartet format of two mandolins, mandola and mandocello to play a non-classical repertoire. Mandocello player Gary Wikfors founded the group after arranging music for mandolin quartet and experimenting with multitrack recordings. He named it after Walkingwood, his home. The founding and still current as of 2023 members are Ellen Cohn (mandolin), Colin Healy (mandola), Betsy Rome (mandolin) and Wikfors (mandocello). Each plays a different instrument or style in other bands. Rome is a flatpicking guitarist with the bluegrass-swing band Too Blue. Healy is a fiddler with the Ash Creek String Band. Cohn accompanies Irish and Québécois music on piano and guitar. Wikfors plays mandolin with The Fiddleheads.
