The Unicorn

Venues

The Unicorn was a small coffeehouse on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles, California. It is remembered as the first folk music coffeehouse in Los Angeles. It opened in 1957 under Herb Cohen, a former merchant marine, who borrowed money from folksinger and actor Theodore Bikel to launch the club with Victor Maymudes, later Bob Dylan's tour manager. The Unicorn's success led Cohen and Bikel to open Cosmo Alley, which presented poets like Maya Angelou and comedians like Lenny Bruce alongside folk acts. Cohen went on to manage Frank Zappa, Tim Buckley, and Tom Waits and to run the Bizarre and Straight labels.
