Styx River Ferry

Bands / Ensembles

Styx River Ferry was a bluegrass band from San Francisco led by guitarist Bob Fowler, an Alabama native, and fiddler Ingrid Fowler, the daughter of jazz bandleader Woody Herman. Forming in the mid1960s, members over the years included Chuck Wiley, Ed Dye, Bruce Nemerov, Ed Neff, Bill McClellan, Gene Tortora, Robbie MacDonald and Marty Lanham. Bob and Ingrid persuaded club owner Paul Lampert to start presenting bluegrass at Paul's Saloon in the Marina District. The bar became the Bay Area's main bluegrass venue until it closed in 1991. Bob and Ingrid had moved to Nashville by the mid-1970s.
