Red, White & Blue (grass)
Bands / Ensembles
Red, White & Blue(grass) was a progressive bluegrass and folk band formed in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1969. Guitarist Grant Boatwright and his wife, singer and guitarist Ginger Boatwright, had been performing as a duo while she was in college. They added Dale Whitcomb on banjo and fiddle and Dave Sebolt. The band described its sound as "newgrass," with bluegrass instruments, nonstandard chord structures, and vocal harmonies. It released three albums, starting with Pickin' Up! on GRC Records, which was nominated for a Grammy Award. The band's version of "July, You're a Woman" reached number 71 on the Billboard charts in 1973, and Billboard named the group Most Promising Vocal Group in 1974. Norman Blake, Byron Berline, and Vassar Clements also performed with the band. Ginger Boatwright also owned the Pickin' Parlour, a music club in Nashville, from 1972 to 1981. The band broke up in 1979, and the Boatwrights divorced. Ginger then formed the Bushwhackers. GRC reissued the band's recordings on CD as Red, White & Blue(grass) in 1999.
