Laurie Hicks

Laurie Hicks is a bassist and singer, and the youngest of the five Hicks sisters of Clarkesville, Georgia, who sang together as the Hicks Sisters. Her sisters are Murphy Hicks Henry, Claire, Argen, and Nancy. She grew up singing in the church choir and playing in the school band. A photograph in Murphy Hicks Henry's book Pretty Good for a Girl shows Laurie, Murphy, Argen, and Nancy performing as the Hicks Sisters at the Mt. Laurel Festival in Clarkesville in 1975. She hadn't played music seriously before she joined Red and Murphy & Co., the band led by Murphy and her husband, Red Henry, where she replaced her sister Argen on bass. Murphy taught her the basics of bluegrass guitar and mandolin. She sang with her sisters on the gospel album The Hicks Sisters: With Sweet Accord. Laurie, Nancy, and Argen sang Murphy's "Grandmother's Song" as the Hicks Sisters on the 2022 tribute album When My Momma Sang to Me: The Songs of Murphy Hicks Henry. She later became a pediatrician in North Carolina.
