The Journal of American Folklore is the peer-reviewed quarterly of the American Folklore Society, published continuously since the society's founding in 1888 and by the University of Illinois Press since 2003. Its editors have included Franz Boas, Ruth Benedict, and Richard Dorson, and since 2021 it has been edited by Lisa Gilman. In 1965 it published Mayne Smith's "An Introduction to Bluegrass," adapted from his Indiana University master's thesis, which was the first scholarly study of the genre.
