Holly Tashian
Holly P. Tashian is a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and bassist who has performed as a duo with her husband, Barry Tashian, since 1972. She grew up in Westport, Connecticut, where her mother taught voice and led vocal ensembles. She sang with madrigal groups and in her school's a cappella choir, and she played fiddle. In 1971, Emmylou Harris visited the Tashians' Connecticut home, and hearing her sing led Holly to switch to guitar and start singing country music. She sang in an all-woman band, the Outskirts, and from 1973 to 1980 she and Barry played in a country band around New York City. Barry joined Harris's Hot Band in 1980. The couple spent about three years in Southern California and then followed Harris to Nashville. After Barry left the Hot Band in 1989, they released their debut duo album, Trust in Me. Straw into Gold (1994) won the NAIRD award for Country Album of the Year and the Boston Music Award for Best Country Album, and Harmony (1997) was nominated for Bluegrass Album of the Year at the 1998 Nashville Music Awards. Their songs have been recorded by Emmylou Harris, Kenny Rogers, the Nashville Bluegrass Band, Special Consensus, and Roland White, among others. Their son Daniel Tashian is a songwriter and producer who leads the band the Silver Seas.
