Hired Hands

Bands / Ensembles

The Hired Hands was a bluegrass band from the San Francisco Bay Area, active in the 1970s, led by banjo player Rick Shubb, who later founded the Shubb capo company. Shubb called it his "club band." Its core was Shubb and his first wife, Markie Sanders, who played bass at first and later mandolin. The rest of the lineup rotated among Bay Area musicians, including Paul Shelasky, Brantley Kearns, Pat Enright, Dick Stanley, Bert Johnson and John Cooke. The band eventually settled on Rich Wilbur on guitar and lead vocals, Markie Sanders on mandolin and her brother, Mike Sanders, on bass.
