Highwoods String Band
Bands / Ensembles
The Highwoods String Band (1972–1979) was an old-time string band from Ithaca, New York, with roots in the San Francisco Bay Area. Fiddlers Walt Koken and Bob Potts and banjo player Mac Benford formed the Fat City String Band in Berkeley in late 1970, after Benford's group, Dr. Humbead's New Tranquility String Band, broke up. In the spring of 1972 the three moved to the Ithaca area and joined guitarist Doug Dorschug and bassist Jenny Cleland to form the Highwoods String Band. Filmmaker Larry Edelman documented the group in Dance All Night: The Highwoods String Band Story.
