Hicks Sisters

Bands / Ensembles

The Hicks Sisters were a family singing group from Georgia made up of the Hicks sisters, including Murphy, Argen, Nancy and Laurie. A photograph published in Murphy Hicks Henry's book Pretty Good for a Girl shows all four performing as the Hicks Sisters at the Mt. Laurel Festival in Clarkesville, Georgia, in 1975. That year Murphy and her husband, Red Henry, formed the duo Red and Murphy and moved to Florida, near Gainesville. Argen sometimes joined them on bass, and Nancy later joined on guitar. Murphy went on to found the Murphy Method instructional series and write Pretty Good for a Girl, and Nancy (later Nancy Hicks Pate) wrote songs and played with the Atlanta band Born G____. Nancy, Argen and Laurie recorded together as the Hicks Sisters on "Grandmother's Song," one of Murphy's songs, for the 2022 Arrandem tribute album When My Momma Sang to Me: The Songs of Murphy Hicks Henry.
