Helena Bretfeldová

Helena Bretfeldová (born December 21, 1959) is a Czech music journalist, broadcaster, and ethnomusicologist based in Brno who acts as a prominent authority and organizational pillar within the Czech Republic's bluegrass and traditional roots music scenes. A graduate of Masaryk University with degrees in philosophy and biology, she transitioned into freelance music journalism in 1999, editing for roots music publication Hitbox and curating the comprehensive multi-disc Anthology of Moravian Folk Music series. In addition to writing criticism and producing broadcast programming for major networks like Český rozhlas and Radio Proglas, she has served as the lead executive organizer of the Letní bluegrassová škola (Summer Bluegrass School) since its founding in 1991, developing the long-running instructional workshop into a vital institutional hub that connects leading European instrumentalists with the country's vibrant acoustic string band community.
