Happy Hollow String Band

Bands / Ensembles

The Happy Hollow String Band was an all-female teenage bluegrass group from Asheboro, North Carolina, active in the early-to-mid 1970s. Formed by sisters Gwen and Robin Auman with Sandy Crisco (Hatley), Sonia Hughes (Michael), and Karen Joyner (Pendley), the band challenged the male-dominated bluegrass scene, winning prizes at fiddlers’ conventions like Fiddler’s Grove and making a feminist statement with their musicianship at a time when women were often treated as novelties in the genre.
