Grass Reflection

Bands / Ensembles

The Grass Reflection was a bluegrass family band from northern Virginia active in the 70s and 80s. The band, which was known as the Spence Kids until 1973, featured the Spence siblings Kevin (guitar) Karen (bass) Steve (banjo, guitar) and E.J. "Unkle Fudd" Spence (who may have been their father) on dobro. They released their first album on Maryland-based ZAP records in 1976 which also featured Dave Propst on mandolin and guitar. By 1983, when they released “Turn the Green Hills Brown” on Webco Records, Kevin had joined the Army so Karen switched to guitar and Steve’s wife, Susan Hudson Spence, joined on bass. The album also featured Robin Bullock on mandolin and guitar. By the late 80s, it appears that Karen began pursuing a solo career recording two more albums for Webco: With Love to Daddy in 1985 (which was credited to Karen Spence And Friends Of Bluegrass) and Sleeping In The Summertime in 1986 with Ernie Sykes.
