Ghost Rockets

Bands / Ensembles

The Ghost Rockets were an alternative country band from New York City, formed by guitarist and singer Buddy Woodward and songwriter Gary Pig Gold, who were introduced in Greenwich Village in 1990 by Lauren Agnelli. Woodward, a California native, had toured in the 1980s with Chris von Sneidern's Lost Patrol and with British mod-revival bands including the Jet Set and Squire, and had just played in London with Smalltown Parade. The pair named the band the Ghost Rockets in 1992, taking a term for unexplained aerial sightings. They soon added pedal steel and Dobro player Bob Hoffnar and later Mick Hargreaves. The band recorded many demos at Woodward's and Gold's home studios for a planned debut tentatively titled Maximum Rhythm 'N' Bluegrass, and in 1998 self-released the compilation Bootlegs, with Woodward, Gold, Hoffnar, Hargreaves and Pete Green. Woodward later led the New York honky-tonk band Buddy Woodward and the Nitro Express and in 2003 co-founded the bluegrass band the Dixie Bee-Liners.
