Freight and Salvage

Venues

The Freight & Salvage is a music venue in Berkeley, California that has long served as a local epicenter for traditional acoustic music. Established in 1968 by Nancy Owens, the original small coffeehouse hosted an eclectic mix of folk, blues, and spoken word. The venue was a magnet for bluegrass and traditional artists like Vern and Ray and then up and coming musicians such as Peter Rowan, Laurie Lewis, and Tony Rice. The venue played a pivotal role in mandolin virtuoso David Grisman's development of his self styled "Dawg music," a progressive subgenre that blended bluegrass with jazz, swing, and roots music. Now operated by the Berkeley Society for the Preservation of Traditional Music in a much larger facility, the Freight remains a hub for bluegrass in the East Bay.
