Connie & Babe

Bands / Ensembles

Connie & Babe were a bluegrass act from the Nashville, Tennessee, area, led by guitarist, singer and songwriter Connie Gately and guitarist and singer Babe Lofton, with their band, first called the Black Mountain Boys and later the Backwoods Boys. The group formed around 1952 and went dormant in the late 1950s while members did military service. It re-formed around 1960 with Thayer Washer and played for college and urban audiences in Nashville during the 1960s. The Backwoods Boys were never a full-time band, since the members all had other careers. After being rediscovered in the Nashville area in 1973, the band recorded two albums for Rounder, Basic Bluegrass (1973) and Backwoods Bluegrass (1975), and it returned to the studio in 1992. Lofton died in 1993 and Gately in 2012.
