Chicks (formerly Dixie Chicks)
Bands / Ensembles
The Chicks, originally formed as the Dixie Chicks in Dallas, Texas in 1989, began as a bluegrass-leaning all-woman band. The founding lineup included sisters Martie and Emily Erwin (later Maguire and Strayer), bassist Laura Lynch, and guitarist Robin Lynn Macy. Rooted in bluegrass and country traditions, they performed at festivals, busked, and toured small venues, gaining recognition on the bluegrass circuit. Macy left in 1992, and Lynch became the lead singer until she was replaced by Natalie Maines in 1995. With Martie on fiddle/mandolin and Emily on banjo/Dobro, the group helped spotlight women as instrumentalists and bandleaders in a field long dominated by men.
