Charles Wolfe
Dr. Charles K. Wolfe (1943–2006) was an American music historian, author, and ethnomusicologist who pioneered the academic study and formal documentation of old-time, early country, and traditional bluegrass music. He earned a Ph.D. from the University of Kansas in 1971 and spent thirty-five years as a Professor of English and folklore at Middle Tennessee State University, a central location that allowed him to extensively interview first-generation roots music pioneers. Wolfe authored or co-authored roughly 20 definitive texts, including A Good-Natured Riot: The Birth of the Grand Ole Opry (1999) and Kentucky Country: Folk and Country Music of Kentucky (1983), while writing columns for Bluegrass Unlimited.
