Buffalo Gals

Bands / Ensembles

The Buffalo Gals were an all-woman bluegrass band formed at Syracuse University in New York and active through the late 1970s. The members were Martha Trachtenberg (guitar, vocals), Susie Monick (banjo, vocals), Carol Siegel (mandolin, vocals), Sue Raines Tice (fiddle, vocals) and Nancy Josephson (bass, vocals). In 1975 the Buffalo Gals recorded their only album for Revonah Records in Ferndale, New York, live on a two-track machine over two days. The cover reads First Borne and the back reads First Born. Promoters Carlton Haney and Jim Clark booked the band for festivals. The growing tour schedule led to a move to Nashville, which cost the band its mandolinist, Siegel.
