Border’s Books and Music

Venues

Borders Books and Music was a superstore that grew from the Borders chain which brothers Tom and Louis Borders started in 1971 as a small book shop in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The brothers opened their first large store prototype in 1985 and by the mid-1990s, Borders was considered the premier book superstore of the decade, with sprawling stores of 30,000 square feet or more that paired books with deep CD sections, listening stations, and espresso cafes. Those cafes often hired local musicians to perform on Friday and Saturday nights. The flagship Ann Arbor store went further, hosting national acts like the Indigo Girls and Patti Smith and recording them for its "Live at 01" series. The company was liquidated in 2011.
