Bluegrass Travelers

Bands / Ensembles

The Bluegrass Travelers were a bluegrass band from Frederick, Maryland, active in the 1960s. Members included Bill Berry, banjo player Paul Chaney, bassist Carroll Harbaugh, fiddler Billy Poffenberger and guitarist Sonny Aughinbaugh. The band recorded for Frederick's Fonotone label. After Bill Berry was killed in a car accident in 1966, the remaining members brought in singer and multi-instrumentalist Gloria Belle in 1967 to lead the band. She renamed it Gloria Belle and the Green Mountain Travelers and insisted that every member, including herself, receive equal pay. In a 2006 oral history Belle said the band eventually broke up over money disputes. She later joined Jimmy Martin's Sunny Mountain Boys in 1968.
