Bluegrass Five
Bands / Ensembles
The Bluegrass Five was a bluegrass band from Georgia, built around the husband-and-wife duo J.N. Baxter (guitar, vocals) and Onie Baxter (mandolin, guitar, vocals). Both grew up in West Georgia and married in 1954, and Onie taught J.N. to play guitar. In 1961 they formed a five-piece band with Hughie Wylie on mandolin, Howard McGuire on bass and Joe Will McGuire on banjo, and about two years later it took the name the Bluegrass Five. J.N. and Onie Baxter were inducted into the Atlanta Country Music Hall of Honor in 1998 and the Atlanta Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001. J.N. Baxter died on October 24, 2016.
