Bluegrass Alliance
Bands / Ensembles
The Bluegrass Alliance (1968–1978) was a progressive bluegrass band from Louisville, Kentucky, led by fiddler Lonnie Peerce. The founding lineup included Peerce, guitarist Dan Crary, banjo player Buddy Spurlock, and bassist Ebo Walker. The band became the house band at Louisville's Red Dog Saloon in October 1968, and a teenage Sam Bush soon joined on mandolin and fiddle. Tony Rice joined on guitar in 1970, and Courtney Johnson later replaced Spurlock on banjo. Bush, Johnson, Walker and Curtis Burch left to form the New Grass Revival after a dispute with Peerce. Vince Gill sang and played guitar with the band in the mid-1970s along with Bill Millet on banjo, Al White on mandolin and Marshall Billingsly on bass. Other members over the years included Chuck Nation and fiddler Hoot Hester. The band broke up in 1978. Banjo player Barry Palmer later formed a new Bluegrass Alliance with Peerce's blessing, which recorded the album Re-Alliance in 2001.
